San Antonio Valley AVA (recognized June 8, 2006) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is located in the east of the Santa Clara County administrative area in the San Antonio Valley . Viticulture has been a tradition in the San Antonio Valley since 1771, when the first vineyard was planted near a mission station. San Antonio Valley has a very warm climate and is protected by the Santa Lucia Mountains to the west . Coming from the north, the cooling sea breezes of Monterey Bay can cool the area and the artificially dammed Lake San Antonio moderates the climate. The climate is comparable to the great Paso Robles AVA and the area is known for grape varieties that mainly come from Bordeaux and the Rhône in France.
