Monterey AVA (recognized since June 15, 1984) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is in the eastern part of Monterey County and is part of the parent Central Coast AVA . The area extends over the Carmel Valley and Salinas Valley and now includes 7 subzones. By opening up to Monterey Bay , the area benefits from the cooling effects of the mists and sea breezes of the Pacific, and daytime temperatures rarely exceed 24 ° C. However, the growing season for the vines is exceptionally long. The sandy soil usually needs to be watered with the water from the Salinas River .
