Arroyo Seco AVA (recognized since April 15, 1983) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is located in the administrative area of Monterey County , southeast of Monterey Bay and is part of the parent Central Coast AVA and Monterey AVA . The wine-growing region lies between the towns of Soledad and King City and borders the Arroyo Seco Creek . In the north of the appellation, the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA wine region joins. The valley benefits from an opening to Monterey Bay. As a result, the cooling mists and sea breezes of the Pacific Ocean can have a moderating effect on the climate. In addition, it is shadowed to the west by the Santa Lucia Mountains . This means that early-ripening grape varieties such as Chardonnay , Pinot Noir and Riesling thrive here . The area is known for the pebble-strewn soil. The locals call the almost potato-sized stones "greenfield potatoes". In addition to a tempering effect, the stones also ensure excellent drainage of the soil.
