Santa Lucia Highlands AVA (recognized since May 15, 1992) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is located in the eastern part of the administrative area of Monterey County and is part of the parent Central Coast AVA and the Monterey AVA , southeast of Salinas . The wine-growing region lies at the foot of the Santa Lucia Range along the Salinas Valley and is not far from the town of Soledad . In the south of the appellation, the Arroyo Seco AVA wine-growing region adjoins. The vineyards are not over 350 m above sea level. NN and are therefore still cooled by the morning coastal mists of the Pacific . The higher areas are thus warmer than the valley areas. More than half of the area under vines is planted with the Chardonnay grape variety .
