San Lucas AVA (recognized since January 29, 1987) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is located in the south of Monterey County . The protected designation of origin is part of the parent Monterey AVA and is defined in the east by the Salinas River and in the west by the Santa Lucia Mountains . In the north is the San Bernabe AVA and in the east of the area at the southernmost end of the Salinas Valley is the Chalone AVA . The appellation benefits from the early shading of the vineyards by the Santa Lucia Mountains, so the difference between day and night temperatures is very pronounced. This allows early-ripening grape varieties such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to flourish despite the warm climate . The owners of what is currently the world's largest contiguous vineyard, the San Bernabe vineyard , are trying to gain recognition as a wine-growing region.
