The Ironman Lake Placid is a triathlon sporting event over the Ironman distance (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling, 42.195 km running) that has been held annually in July since 1999 in Lake Placid , USA .
organization
On August 15, 1999 the triathlon - initially under the name "Ironman USA" - was held for the first time with 1500 starting places, organized by the Canadian Graham Fraser, founder of North American Sports (NA Sports) and since 1996 organizer of Ironman Canada in Penticton .
As the first triathlon over the Ironman distance on the mainland of the USA, he also used this trademark and Fraser paid license fees to the WTC for this purpose , in return 80 qualification places for the Ironman Hawaii were awarded at Ironman USA in 1999 , their number was already two years later increased to one hundred. Before that, there were already 15 qualifying competitions for the Ironman Hawaii in the USA, but these did not use the Ironman trademark in the event name and, with the exception of the "Vineman Triathlon" in Santa Rosa, all had shorter distances than the Ironman Hawaii and significantly fewer qualifying places in the Offer. The maximum number in the US was previously offered by the Wildflower Triathlon in 1998 with 28 qualifying places for amateurs in the age groups and fifteen professional triathletes. Only the “Ricoh Ironman US Championship” in Los Angeles in 1983 had the “Ironman” trademark in their name on the mainland of the USA.
The competition established itself quickly, starting places were allocated so quickly that in 2001 the triathlon competitions “St. Croix Half Ironman "," Gulf Coast Triathlon "," Blackwater EagleMan Triathlon "," Buffalo Springs Lake Triathlon "and" Tupper Lake Tinman Triathlon "each have ten qualification places for the Ironman USA in Lake Placid, and even 20 places available for the" Muskoka Triathlon " were. In 2002 the number of starting places in Lake Placid was already 2,000, in 2004 it was increased to 2,200, in 2006 to 2,400, in 2008 to 2,600 and in 2010 to 3,000 athletes.
In 2008, the WTC moved into the possession of a private equity company and then changed its strategy of not only granting the right to use the brand names it protected in the United States Patent and Trademark Office via license fees to independent organizers, but since then also the organization of others To take responsibility for events in addition to the Ironman Hawaii. Accordingly, the WTC bought Graham Fraser's US shares in his company NA Sports, and the triathlon has been organized directly by the WTC since 2009.
The race enables amateurs to qualify for the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii. The number of qualification places has been reduced over the years from one hundred places at the beginning of the 2000s to 72 places in 2010, 60 places in 2013 and 50 places in 2015 to 40 places in 2016. In 2015, the triathlon was also held as a purely amateur event for the first time , a qualification for professional triathletes via the Kona Pro Ranking System 2015 was not possible, nor was prize money paid out to the winners in 2015.
For 2016, another US $ 50,000 prize money was announced for female professional triathletes, while male professional triathletes will be awarded prize money at Ironman Canada in Whistler.
