Daniel Monzoro Fontana (born December 31, 1975 in General Roca , Argentina ) is an Italian triathlete . He is a two-time Olympic athlete (2004, 2008), multiple Ironman winner and leads the best list of Italian triathletes on the Ironman distance . (As of March 2019)
Career
He was born in the Patagonia region of Argentina and started his first triathlon in 1994. In 1997, 1999 and 2001 he became Argentine champion. In 2004 he started for Argentina at the Olympic Games and finished 28th.
Daniel Fontana has Argentinian and Italian citizenship. He started for Argentina until 2005 and moved to Italy in 2006. Since then he's started for Italy. In 2008 he started in Beijing for the second time at the Olympic Games and finished there in 33rd place.
Fontana then switched from the short triathlon to the longer distances and became Ironman 70.3 Vice World Champion in 2009 (1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21 km running). In April 2010, he finished third in South Africa at his first start on the Ironman distance (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running).
In October 2016, Fontana won the Ironman Taiwan and thus his second Ironman race after 2014.
Daniel Fontana is trained by Simon Diamanten and starts for the Dimensione Dello Sport (DDS) team. Today he lives in Settimo Milanese .
