View of Zell am See

In addition to the Ironman 70.3 Austria , this became the second WTC event over this distance in Austria. At the premiere, the best placed amateurs in their age groups were able to acquire one of thirty starting places at the end of the season of the series, the Ironman 70.3 World Championship, in 2015 this number was increased to 35. The starting field was limited to 1,800 starters due to the maximum capacity of the bike course. Since 2014, a changed route of the bike course has offered 2200 starting places.

In August 2015, the event was split over two days: On Saturday the Ironman 70.3 Zell am See-Kaprun took place as a pure amateur competition without prize money. On Sunday, the season finale of the series, the Ironman 70.3 World Championship, took place on the same course - for the first time outside of North America and for the second time outside of the USA. Participation on Sundays was only possible with prior qualification in a competition under the trademark of the WTC. The Ironman 70.3 World Championship is not a formal world championship awarded by an international association , but with 250,000 US dollars in prize money it was the most highly endowed triathlon competition in 2015 in Europe before the ITU World Triathlon Hamburg .

The starting field was enlarged again in 2017 and on August 27, around 2500 athletes from over 60 nations started in Lake Zell.

In August 2018 the race had to be held without the bike distance due to the weather. The last race was here on September 1st, 2019.

Routing

  • The 1.9 km long swim course extends over a lap in Lake Zell between the start in Schüttdorf and the old town of Zell . The swim start is a water start and is carried out in waves. The professional athletes start as the first group, in 2015 the participants were divided into eight start groups.
  • The bike course is a 90 km long circuit with a total of 870 m ascent, which first leads from the swimming exit in Schüttdorf via Bruck an der Großglocknerstraße and Pinzgauer Straße to Lend and then on to Dienten am Hochkönig to the highest point of the route (1280 m). The Hochkönigstraße down branches off the track just before Saalfelden through the Saalachtal again Pinzgauer Strasse, then via Maishofen in the Zeller old town and continue along the lake Schüttdorf. Before switching to the running route, there is a short loop to a turning point near Piesendorf and then back to Schüttdorf via Kaprun and Bruck on the Hochglocknerstrasse.
  • The running route extends from Schüttdorf clockwise along the lake to the turning point in Thumersbach and the finish is in the old town of Zell am See.
