Triathlon from 2008

At the XTerra World Championship on Maui in 2008 Michael Weiss finished second in the off-road triathlon (1.5 km swimming, 32 km mountain bike and 12 km cross-country running). Since September 2008 he has been trained by Mario Huys .
At the Ironman 70.3 Monaco he qualified for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship 2009. At the Ironman Hawaii in October 2009, he reached the 25th place as the best Austrian. He needed 8:55:11 h for the long distance (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running).

Michael Weiss was the first Austrian to achieve an Ironman victory in his second start over the long distance triathlon on May 1st, 2010 in St. George . Before him, the Australian Kate Allen, who started for Austria, won the 2005 Ironman Austria long distance .

At the Ironman Austria in July 2011, Weiss became the first Austrian athlete to achieve an Ironman time of less than eight hours (7:57:39 h) with his second place and thus achieved the best time of an Austrian athlete. At the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Nevada / USA in September 2011, Weiss achieved fourth place. In October he won the world championship in cross triathlon (XTerra) on Maui after winning the bronze medal here in the previous two years.

2011 doping ban

Weiss hit the doping headlines for the first time in August 2007 when he, as an active mountain biker, had to serve a protective barrier due to an excessively high hematocrit value. The ex-professional cyclist Bernhard Kohl , banned for doping , made doping allegations against Michael Weiss in 2009. Because of the suspicion of doping , the National Anti-Doping Agency Austria (NADA) opened an investigation against Weiss in April 2010, which was then ended in September 2010 by the NADA Legal Commission with a preliminary acquittal. However, based on the testimony of Bernhard Kohl, the legal commission also found in 2010 that Weiss had been with human plasma for doping purposes . Because Kohl did not want to repeat his earlier statements in the trial, he was acquitted.

Michael Weiss was punished in November 2011 by the Arbitration Commission of NADA, the last court of appeal in Austrian sports, for using a prohibited method in autumn 2005. Weiss was therefore banned from all competitions for two years until November 29, 2013.
Since the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), his sponsors and all coaches continued to support Weiss, he continued training in the USA for a comeback and at the same time did a professional training in Colorado Springs.

Comeback 2013

In December 2013 he won the Ironman Mexico with a new personal best on the long distance. With his winning time of 7:55:23 h, he was still the leader in the best list of Austrian triathletes on the Ironman distance .

In November he was able to successfully defend his title in Mexico and clinched his third victory in twelve months at the fifth start on the Ironman distance.

In June 2016 he was fourth at Ironman Austria and thus the fastest Austrian national champion in the long distance triathlon. In September he won his first Ironman 70.3 race at the first edition of the Ironman 70.3 Santa Cruz . He was the only professional athlete from Austria to qualify for a place at the Ironman Hawaii . In October, he finished third in the combined rankingKona-Maui Double Winner ” (Xterra and Ironman).

In March 2017, he crashed his bike at the Ironman 70.3 Campeche in Mexico when a 13-year-old boy ran onto the racetrack. The child was uninjured but Michael Weiss broke his collarbone. In August 2017 Weiss won the Ironman Maastricht-Limburg and set a new course record with his winning time of 8:18:09 h.

He won the Ironman Austria in July 2018 after having finished second twice and third once in previous years. Together with his victory at Ironman 70.3 Austria in May and Ironman 70.3 Zell am See-Kaprun in August, Michael Weiss became the first athlete to win all three Austrian competitions in the Ironman racing series in one year. At his eighth start in Hawaii in October at the Ironman World Championships, he finished tenth as the best Austrian and with his bike time of 4:11:28 h he was in second place in the list of course records . Two weeks after his victory at Ironman Mexico , the then 37-year-old was also able to win the Ironman Mar del Plata and thus the third Ironman race of the season in December .
