Edith Niederfriniger (born June 2, 1971 in Meran , South Tyrol ) is a former Italian triathlete . She is the European long-distance triathlon champion (2003) and two-time Ironman winner (2006, 2007). She has topped the list of Italian triathletes in the Ironman distance since 2008.

Career

Edith Niederfriniger is a qualified sports teacher, began swimming as a competitive sport in 1980 and has been running triathlons since 1989. She started for the Sport Club Meran Triathlon and has been a member of the Italian national triathlon team since 1999.

In 1999 she became Italian champion over the long distance triathlon (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running). In September she was third in the national championship on the short distance in Peschiera del Garda .

In August 2002 she started the long-distance triathlon at Ironman Germany in Frankfurt am Main and came fourth straight away.

European champion long distance triathlon 2003

In Denmark, she became the 2003 European long-distance triathlon champion. She is the first Italian to stay below the nine-hour mark at Ironman Austria in 2008 .

Niederfriniger is also successful as a long-distance runner and won the South Tyrol Marathon in 2003 on the half marathon route and in 2004, 2005 and 2008 on the full distance. Her victory time in 2004 (2:47:39 h) is a former South Tyrolean marathon state record, which was broken in 2007 by Renate Rungger .
In 2006 she came second in the Munich Marathon in 2:48:08 h and thus secured the title of Munich Hero for the combination of the Munich Triathlon and Munich Marathon ahead of the German Nicole Leder .

In May 2011 she became national champion in the long distance triathlon for the second time since 1999. In 2012 she came second in the first national championship on the triathlon middle distance.

The athlete, nicknamed “Ironfrini”, was trained by Fabio Vedana and has been coached by sports and nutritionist Bram van Dam for many years . At the Ironman in Klagenfurt in June 2014, she declared her active professional career over.

In March 2015, Niederfriniger was hit by a vehicle during bike training in South Africa and seriously injured.
