The Ironman Malaysia is an annual triathlon event since 2000 over the Ironman distance (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running) in Langkawi, Malaysia .

organization

It is part of the Ironman World Series of the World Triathlon Corporation and was the first competition of the season for several years. The participants have the opportunity to qualify for a starting place at the Ironman Hawaii .

The first Ironman Malaysia took place in 2000 with only about 100 participants. The Ironman Malaysia is not only popular with Asians , as the racing level is comparably low to Europe . The athletes repeatedly struggle with the heat and high humidity when racing on the island off the northwest coast of Malaysia.
Over 200 helpers looked after the athletes in 2005 and a total of around 20,000 spectators were present along the route. As a result, this Ironman event has become a not insignificant source of income for the tourism companies on the island of Langkawi.

Langkawi at Pantai Cenang

In 2010, the Ironman Malaysia was held for the tenth time. In the years 2011 to 2013 the event did not take place and in 2014 the Ironman Malaysia was held again on September 27th. For 2015, the twelfth edition has been postponed even further to November.

Route

  • The swimming stage runs over a lap in the bay of the main town on the island of Kuah - below the landmark of Langkawi, an imposing sea eagle statue.
  • This is followed by the bike route over a circuit that has to be tackled twice.
  • The final marathon route is two laps.

Course records

The course record has been held by the German Diana Riesler since 2017 with 9:19:00 h and in the men's race since the 17th edition in 2019 by the Spaniard Javier Gómez Noya with 8:18:59 h.
