Danylo Volodymyrowytsch Sapunow ( Ukrainian Данило Володимирович Сапунов ; born April 5, 1982 in Zaporizhia , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian triathlete . He was a member of the Ukrainian national team and is a three-time Olympic participant (2004, 2008, 2012).

Career

Danylo Sapunow was active as a triathlete since 1997. Sapunow started in his early competitions for Kazakhstan, his first name appears in old start lists as Daniil. According to older ITU documents, Sapunov comes from Kazakhstan.

He started in Athens in 2004 at the Summer Olympics and finished 17th. In 2005 he was U23 vice world champion and in 2008 he started again in Beijing at the Summer Olympics . In the eleven years from 2000 to 2010, Sapunov took part in 94 ITU competitions and achieved 56 top ten places, including 13 gold medals.

Danylo Sapunow was married to the Ukrainian professional triathlete Julija Jelistratowa (* 1988) from 2008 to 2010 .

As the best Ukrainian triathlete in the ITU qualification list for London 2012 (Men Olympic Ranking London 2012, as of February 2011), he was also considered the Ukraine's Olympic hope for the third time. He was able to qualify for an Olympic starting place and finished 42nd in August 2012 in London.

In November 2015 he started the long distance triathlon for the first time and at Ironman Malaysia Sapunow finished ninth. In June 2016 he finished third in the national triathlon championships.

In November 2018, the then 36-year-old won his first Ironman race with the Ironman Malaysia. He lives in Kiev .

Doping ban 2019

During a training control as part of the Ironman Hawaii , Sapunow tested positive for erythropoietin (EPO) on October 8, 2019 and he was retroactively given a four-year doping ban in April 2020.
