Luke Jarrod McKenzie (born July 26, 1981 in Taree , New South Wales ) is a former Australian triathlete and duathlete . He is a multiple Ironman winner (2008-2017) and was runner-up in the 2013 Ironman World Championship . He is in second place in the best list of Australian triathletes on the Ironman distance (as of September 2019).

Career

Luke McKenzie grew up on the central northwest coast of Australia . From an early age he showed a great passion for sport. He first began playing football , then rugby , cricket , tennis , golf , athletics , basketball , running , swimming and water polo .

In 1995 he started his first triathlon , was able to win straight away and has won nine times in the long or Ironman distance (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running).

At the age of 16 he started for the Australian national team in the duathlon in Sankt Wendel , where he was the youngest participant in his class to achieve seventh place. In 2001 he was third in the junior class at the world championship on the short distance.

Second at the Ironman Hawaii 2013

In October 2013 he finished second at the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii .

In December 2015 he won the Ironman in Busselton and with his winning time of 7:55:57 hours McKenzie set the fastest time in a race in Australia.

His nicknames are "Macca" or "Jimmy". He was married to triathlete Amanda Balding (* 1977) from 2010 to 2013 .
He has been married to triathlete Beth McKenzie (née Gerdes) since May 12, 2016 . Their daughter was born in May 2014 and a second daughter was born in July 2017. Luke McKenzie has not appeared internationally since 2018.
