The Ironman Texas (Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas) is an annual triathlon sporting event over the Ironman distance (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running) held in April or May in The Woodlands in the US state Texas .

organization

Ironman Texas was held for the first time on May 21, 2011 - about 45 km north of Houston . The race in May gives amateurs an early qualification for a starting place at the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii - under similar conditions as in Kailua-Kona: At the first edition in 2011, 65 slots (starting places for Hawaii) were allocated here, broken down according to the number of participants in the individual age groups , from 2012 to 2014 50 slots were awarded. Since 2015 there have been 75 qualification places for the Ironman Hawaii in The Woodlands.

Professional triathletes fighting for the US $ 150,000 prize money in the context of the Ironman Texas have been able to qualify for the Ironman Hawaii, which is advertised for a total of US $ 650,000, via the Kona Pro Ranking System (KPR) since 2011 . In The Woodlands, winners - like Ironman Melbourne , Ironman South Africa , Ironman Germany and Ironman Brasil - receive 4,000 points each, and those placed receive a correspondingly reduced number of points.
For comparison: The winner in Hawaii receives 8,000 points, the winners of the other Ironman races either 1,000 or 2,000 points. Since 2015, the winners of the Ironman Texas have qualified directly for the Ironman Hawaii.

Shortened course 2016

In 2016, the race had to be held on a shortened bike course (around 150 instead of 180.2 km). In 2017, the event was brought forward from May to April 22nd and the Ironman North American Championship was held here for the third time in a row .

Shortened course 2018

In April 2018, Matt Hanson set a new course record for the men with 7:39:25 h and the first eleven men were all able to finish the race in 2018 with a time of less than eight hours. The Australian Melissa Hauschildt reached the goal after 8:31:04 h and ten women stayed below the 9-hour mark. After the race, however, it became known that the bike course had to be shortened by three kilometers for safety reasons and that the times would therefore not be recognized as official Ironman records.

In 2019, the Ironman North American Championship was held here on April 27th. The event originally planned for April 25, 2020 was postponed to a later date at the beginning of March as the coronavirus spread .

Routing

  • The swimming distance runs through Woodlands Lake - with entry in the north and the finish in the southeast.
  • The bike course goes around The Woodlands and ends again at its starting point.
  • From there, the marathon distance goes over three laps along Woodlands Lake.

Course records

  • In the men's race in 2017, the American Matt Hanson was the first athlete to win the race for the second time after 2015 with 7:52:44 h, thus setting a new best time for a US athlete. The first five men were all able to finish the race with a time under eight hours. In 2019, the Swede Patrik Nilsson finished the race after 7:50:55 hours.
  • The women's course record has been held by Rachel Joyce from Britain with 8:49:14 h since 2013 , until Daniela Ryf improved this time to 8:37:48 h in 2019.
