The Ironman Hamburg is since 2017 in Hamburg on the Ironman as distance (km 3.86 swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running) discharged Triathlon - sporting event .

organization

Ironman Hamburg is operated by Ironman Germany GmbH , which is part of the Wanda Group as a subsidiary of the World Triathlon Corporation . Since taking over Lagardère Unlimited Events Germany GmbH in 2016, she has also been running the Hamburg Triathlon , which has been held since 2002, and the Cyclassics Hamburg, which has been held since 1996 . Ironman Hamburg is the second triathlon run by this company over this distance in Germany , alongside Ironman Germany in Frankfurt am Main, which has been held since 2002 .

In 2017, the cycle route led four times over the Köhlbrand Bridge over the Port of Hamburg

Amateurs have the opportunity to qualify for a starting place at the Ironman Hawaii , for which 40 qualification places are available. Professional triathletes fighting for the US $ 80,000 prize money in Hamburg can qualify for the US $ 650,000 competition in Hawaii via the Kona Pro Ranking System (KPR). In Hamburg, the winner and winner will each receive 2000 points, and those placed will receive a correspondingly reduced number of points. For comparison: the winner in Hawaii receives 8,000 points, the winners in Frankfurt , Texas , Florianópolis , Cairns and Port Elizabeth each receive 4,000, and in the other Ironman races either 1,000 or 2,000 points.

The race took place for the first time on August 13, 2017 - the same day as the Challenge Regensburg . About 2500 athletes started.

At the second event in July 2018, the race had to be started with a 6 km run instead of swimming because the blue-green algae concentration in the water of the Alster was too high and the swimming distance could not be carried out. The times of this year are therefore not international and can be compared with other races, but the participants were still able to qualify for a starting place at the Ironman Hawaii (Ironman World Championships) and the results were rated as the German championship on the long distance.

The discharge in 2020, which was scheduled for 21 June, had to because of the coronavirus - pandemic be postponed and a new deadline of 6 September prospect was made.

Route

After male and female professionals have started their races in separate starting groups, the amateurs have a rolling start. The participants, each in groups of around half a dozen athletes, receive the start clearance at the same time, the individual competition time is measured by means of transponders and timing mats that have to be overrun. The advantage of this measure is that the participants are equalized at an early stage and thus the formation of groups on the bike course is reduced. The disadvantage is that the order in the ranking cannot be inferred from the order in which they crossed the finish line.

The first edition went over the following routes:

  • The 3.8 km long swimming distance led after the start on Jungfernstieg in an M-shape through the Inner and Outer Alster , with a short shore leave in the middle.
  • The 180 km bike course ran over two laps and led through HafenCity and the southern metropolitan region of Hamburg. The Köhlbrand Bridge was crossed four times.
  • The final 42.2 kilometer marathon runs over four laps along the Inner and Outer Alster with the goal of Rathausmarkt .
