Although the event was named "Event of the Year" by the British Triathlon Association, after the event there were reports of high losses by the organizer, the website disappeared and even months later there was still no registration option. The WTC canceled the license agreement and concluded a new one with “Worldmasters Marketing”, who carried out the event with the same concept on September 8, 2002 with 30 qualifying places for Hawaii 2003 and 25,000 US dollars in prize money. The goal was announced to expand the event to one over the full Ironman distance.

In 2003, according to the WTC, based on a survey of participants, the venue was moved from Wales to Sherborne in southern England. Ron Thorne replaced Ron Bell as race director. In 2005, the length of the Half Ironman UK in Sherborne was doubled and the event continued under the name Ironman UK from August 21, 2005. In 2009 the venue was relocated 400 km north to Bolton near Manchester. The only 20-year-old Briton Philip Graves won this race as the youngest winner to date - at his first start over the Ironman distance.

The Ironman UK is part of the Ironman World Series of the World Triathlon Corporation . Amateurs have the opportunity to qualify for the Ironman World Championship at Ironman Hawaii over forty qualification places allocated here . Professional triathletes competing for a total of 50,000 US dollars in prize money in Bolton can use the Kona Pro Ranking System to collect points for a qualification for Ironman Hawaii. The winners in Bolton receive 2000 points, further places a correspondingly reduced number of points. Hawaii has the most points (8000), followed by u. a. Ironman Germany (Frankfurt) and Ironman Texas (4000). Other full-distance Ironman races award either 1000 or 2000 points for victory.
