Llanberis [ ɬanˈbɛrɪs ] is a village in Gwynedd , Wales . The place is immediately northwest of Snowdon on the banks of the Llyn Padarn lake . At the census in March 2011 it had 2,026 inhabitants.
For centuries, Llanberis was - as a traveler described it in 1693 - a small, poor hamlet that was difficult to reach . Today's place was created as a settlement for the workers in the surrounding slate quarries. A museum in Llanberis, the National Slate Museum on the former site of the Dinorwic quarry , commemorates this today.
Since the fall of the Welsh slate industry , the village has lived mainly from tourism. A large number of tourists come to the place either to take the cogwheel train to Snowdon or to hike up to it on foot. Another narrow-gauge railway is the Llanberis Lake Railway , which runs about four kilometers on the banks of the Llyn Padarn.
Residents of the village can also find employment in the large local pumped storage power plant in Dinorwig .
