Peetu Piiroinen (born February 15, 1988 in Hyvinkää ) is a Finnish freestyle snowboarder .

Career

Piiroinen has been snowboarding since 1997. In February 2003 he started internationally for the first time at the FIS Junior World Championships . In that season he was nominated for the World Cup for the first time, but did not start. While he could not achieve any major success in winter 2003/2004 , the following season 2004/05 was successful for Piiroinen. He managed to finish the World Cup on the Kreischberg in Big Air in second place on the podium and also to win the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival in his second discipline, halfpipe . In the 2005/06 season Piiroinen was Finnish champion, but could not win at the FIS World Cup competitions in 2005/06 . This season took part for the first time in a TTR competition , the Burton European Open , and won a competition in slopestyle . At the Snowboard Junior World Championships in 2006 he won the bronze medal in the halfpipe. In the 2006/07 World Cup season he took his first victory in Graz . He was able to repeat this twice, so that at the end of the season he had two World Cup victories in big air and one in the halfpipe. That season he also won the Big Air World Cup and third in the overall World Cup. In January 2007, he finished fourth in the halfpipe at the Burton European Open and finished 37th in the halfpipe competition and sixth in big air at the 2007 Snowboard World Championships .

Although Piiroinen only started in four World Cup races the following season , he achieved a World Cup success in Big Air and a third place in the halfpipe. He won the TTR tour at Rock the Spot in Bardonecchia . At the O´Neill Evolution in Davos in the quarter pipe, at the Burton European Open in Laax in the half pipe, at Air & Style in Innsbruck in the quarter pipe, at The Oakley Arctic Challenge in Oslo in the quarter pipe and at the Chevrolet Grand Prix in Killington in Slopestyle and in the halfpipe competition he was third. At the end of the season he reached third place in the overall ranking of the World Snowboard Tour. In the World Cup 2008/09 he started with a victory in the first Big Air competition and at the end of the season he reached third place in the Big Air World Cup. He finished the 2008/09 TTR season with 940.57 points for the first time as the overall winner of the TTR World Tour. He won the Quarterpipe at the O'Neill Evolution in Davos and took third place in the Big Air at freestyle.ch in Zurich . He also won the Big Air at the X-Trail Jam in Tokyo and in the Slopestyle at the Burton European Open in Laax, second in the Air & Style in Innsbruck and in the halfpipe competition at the Burton US Open . In March 2009 he became Finnish champion in the halfpipe. In the following season 2009/10 Piiroinen was able to win the title on the TTR tour. At the start of the season, he took third place in Big Air at freestyle.berlin in Berlin and in the halfpipe competition at the World Cup in Saas-Fee and second place at Air & Style in Innsbruck. After third place in slopestyle and halfpipe at the O'Neill Evolution in Davos in January 2010, he won the Slopestyle and halfpipe competition at the Burton European Open in Laax. The following month, Piiroinen won the silver medal in the halfpipe at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver and won the slopestyle at The Oakley Arctic Challenge in Oslo.

After finishing third in Big Air at freestyle.ch in Zurich at the beginning of the 2010/11 season, Piiroinen won the Burton European Open in the halfpipe and came second in Slopestyle. He also won the Air & Style in Munich in the Big Air discipline and came second in the Air & Style in Innsbruck. At the end of the season he won the World Snowboard Tour for the third time in a row. In January 2012 he won the bronze medal in Slopestyle at the Winter X Games 2012 in Aspen . The following month he won the Air & Style in Innsbruck and took third place in Slopestyle at the Burton European Open in Laax . At the Snowboard World Championships in Oslo in 2012 he came in 33rd place in slopestyle and tenth place in halfpipe competition. He finished the season in fourth place overall on the World Snowboard Tour. At the beginning of the 2012/13 season he finished second at the Air & Style in Beijing . In January 2013, he finished third in slopestyle at the US Snowboarding Grand Prix and World Cup in Copper Mountain and sixth in slopestyle at the 2013 Winter X-Games . At the Snowboard World Championships 2013 in Stoneham he came in 23rd place in slopestyle and eighth place in halfpipe competition. In March 2013 he won the bronze medal in slopestyle at the Winter X Games Europe 2013 in Tignes . He finished the season in second place in the Slopestyle classification and in first place in the overall classification of the World Snowboard Tour. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , he finished seventh in slopestyle. In March 2014 he became the Finnish champion in the halfpipe. After finishing fifth at Air & Style in Beijing at the beginning of the 2014/15 season, he finished second at Air & Style in Innsbruck in January 2015 and finished ninth in slopestyle at the 2015 Winter X Games . The following month he finished ninth in the Air & Style in Los Angeles and came fourth in the Air & Style overall ranking. The following year he was seventh in Big Air at the X-Games Oslo 2016. At the Snowboard World Championships 2016 in Yabuli , he won the gold medal in Big Air competition. He also achieved 16th place in slopestyle. In the 2017/18 season he achieved tenth place in the Freestyle World Cup with three top ten placements. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he took 18th place in slopestyle, 14th place in big air and 12th place in the halfpipe.

Peetu's brother Petja Piiroinen also competes in the World Cup.
