Petruskerk tower

The Petruskerk is the main Roman Catholic church in Oirschot in the Netherlands and has the rank of minor basilica .

history

The oldest church in Oirschot is the Mariakerk , which was a parish and collegiate church. In 1268 the construction of a second church on site began, the predecessor of today's Petruskerk. After its completion, the canons moved here. The church burned down in 1462. As a result, today's Petruskerk was built as a three-aisled cruciform basilica with ambulatory and radiant chapels in the Kempen Gothic style. The alternating layers of brick and tuff (replaced by natural stone in the 19th century) are very characteristic of the building. Construction work was completed in 1515. In 1627 the spire was destroyed by a lightning strike, since then the church tower has been blunt. From 1648 to 1799 the church was in Protestant hands. The church was restored in the 19th century. Nevertheless, the church tower partially collapsed in 1904. In 1944 the church suffered severe damage from Allied fire. The reconstruction took place from 1945 to 1952. 2013 received it by Pope Benedict XVI. the title of a minor basilica .

organ

The organ was built in 1842 by the organ builder Franciscus Cornelius Smits (Reek) for the St. Pieters Church (Hertogenbosch) and installed in the Petruskerk in 1846/1847. Today it has 45 registers on three manuals and a pedal .
