The Ironman Brasil Florianópolis has been a triathlon sporting event over the Ironman distance (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running) that has been held in Brazil every year since 1998 .

organization

This event is a race of the Ironman World Series of the World Triathlon Corporation .
Amateurs have the opportunity to qualify for one of 75 starting places at the Ironman World Championship ( Ironman Hawaii ).

Professional triathletes fighting for the US $ 150,000 prize money in the context of Ironman Brasil have been able to qualify for the Ironman Hawaii, which is advertised for a total of US $ 650,000, via the Kona Pro Ranking System (KPR) since 2012 . In Florianópolis, the winners - as well as in Melbourne , Port Elizabeth , Texas and Frankfurt - receive 4,000 points each, while the other places receive a correspondingly reduced number of points. For comparison: The winner in Hawaii receives 8,000 points, the winners of the other Ironman races either 1,000 or 2,000 points.

On May 30, 1998, the “Triathlon Brasil” in Porto Seguro became the “Ironman Brasil” as the seventh qualifying race outside the USA after Ironman New Zealand , Ironman Canada , Ironman Australia , Ironman Europe , Ironman Lanzarote and Ironman Switzerland (the Ironman Japan was not held from 1998 due to storm damage) for the Ironman Hawaii.

In 2001 the organizer and license partner of the WTC, Latin Sports , moved the triathlon to Florianópolis . In 2012, 2085 starters were registered - 205 of them women. With the Ironman Brasil Fortaleza - also organized by Latin Sports - a second Ironman was held in Brazil for the first time in November 2014.

Here in Brazil, the South American Championships (Ironman South American Championships) were held in 2017. The race was last held on May 27, 2018. The event, originally planned for May 31, 2020 , was postponed to November 8 , as part of the spread of the coronavirus .

Route

  • Here in Florianópolis at "El Divono Beach" you swim over two laps with a shore leave in between over 70 m (swimming 2155 and 1575 m).
  • The bike course goes over two laps and the running course here runs over three laps: first over 21 km and then two laps of 10.5 km each.
  • The marathon distance is completed over three laps - one longer lap followed by two shorter laps.

track record

The current best time in this Ironman race is held by the Briton Tim Don with his winning time of 2017 in 7:40:23 h - and thus also the current world best time in the Ironman series. The women's course record has been held by Sarah Pampiano since 2019 with 8:40:49 h.
