Joanna Sue Zeiger (born May 4, 1970 in Baltimore ) is a former American triathlete . She is an Olympian (2000), two-time Ironman winner (2005, 2006) and Ironman 70.3 world champion (2008).
Career
Joanna Zeiger studied at Brown University , later at Johns Hopkins University and she was successful in swimming. In 1992 she also started running and cycling.
In 1997 she was voted “Amateur Triathlete of the Year” and since 1998 she started as a professional triathlete. Zeiger was very versatile and was active in both short and long distance triathlon races.
2000 Summer Olympics
In September 2000, she went to the Summer Olympics in Sydney to the start, where she finished fourth. Six weeks later she was sixth on the long distance at the Ironman Hawaii (Ironman World Championship). In that year she was also the US American short distance champion and she was named "Triathlete of the Year" by the USOC ( United States Olympic Committee ).
In 2001 she was third at the ITU World Championships on the short distance triathlon.
In 2005 she was able to achieve her first victory over the Ironman distance (3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling and 42.195 km running) in Brazil .
Winner Ironman 70.3 World Championships 2008
In November 2008, Joanna Zeiger became world champion over the Ironman 70.3 distance in Florida .
While preparing to defend her title in 2009, Zeiger was involved in a serious cycling accident and she ended her triathlon career.
After her active time in running and cross-country, she works and works as a coach. In 2014 and again in 2015 she won the USA Half Marathon Championships in the Masters class in Houston .
