Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon
The Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon (translated: Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon ) is an annual summer triathlon sports event in and around the Bay of San Francisco in the USA .
organization
This competition has been held annually since 1981. In the first two years the event was reserved for club members and in 1983 the first public competition was held. The distances in this triathlon competition pass today
- 2.4 km swim
- 29 km cycling and
- 12.8 km run.
The start is on the former prison island Alcatraz , from where you swim to the shore of San Francisco . In the past, the start was made directly on the island, today the swimmers take off from a car ferry anchored near the island. The ocean current in the bay and the cold water temperature, which rarely exceeds 15 ° C, pose a particular challenge here. In 2009 there were around 1,700 athletes at the start. In 2010 the race was held for the 30th time.
The Australian Michellie Jones has already won the race here eight times and the American Andy Potts was able to achieve his sixth victory here in 2014.
The British Simon Lessing holds the course record with his winning time from 2004 in 01:54:41 hours. The Australian Michellie Jones has already won this competition eight times and with her winning time from 2004 she also holds the best time for women in 02:08:54 hours. The race is organized today by the International Management Group (IMG) and it was held here for the 35th time in June 2015.
In 2017 the race had to be held without the swimming distance due to weather conditions (18 miles cycling and 8 miles running). In June 2019 the race was held for the 39th time.
