Courtney Atkinson (born August 15, 1979 in Mackay ) is a former Australian duathlete and triathlete . He is the juniors triathlon world champion (1999) and double Olympic athlete (2008, 2012).

Career

Courtney Atkinson started triathlon as a 14-year-old. In Canada he was the 1999 World Junior Triathlon Champion.

In August 2008 he started in Beijing for Australia at the Olympic Games, where he finished eleventh as the best Australian. In 2009 he finished second in the team world championship on the sprint distance. At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, he finished 18th in his second Olympic start.

For many years Atkinson started mainly in competitions in the Olympic distance (short distance: 1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running) and since 2012 he has also competed in longer distances and in cross triathlon. In August 2013 he won his first victory at half the Ironman distance ( Ironman 70.3 : 1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running) in the Philippines.

In 2015 he won the Oceania Championships in cross triathlon. Courtney Atkinson was aiming for a start at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio and then declared his playing time over.

Atkinson is married and lives in Gold Coast with his wife and two daughters (* 2006 and 2012) .
