Career

Mike Pigg was a swimmer in his youth and started triathlon in 1985. Just one year later, he temporarily led the rankings of the American umbrella organization USA Triathlon . Another year later he was the first American champion before Mark Allen . In the following years, Pigg and Scott Molina dominated the American triathlon scene on the short distance: From 1983 to 1994, Molina and Pigg won all American triathlon championships except for 1989 and 1993 . Overall, Mike Pigg competed from 1987 to 1996 in 141 triathlon competitions, of which he was able to win 79.

Second at the Ironman Hawaii 1988

In 1988 he finished second in his fourth start at the Ironman Hawaii. He also won 15 races on the Olympic distance in the same year - out of 20 in which he started. In the other of the two most important long-distance triathlons of the 1980s and 1990s, the Longue Distance de Nice triathlon , he achieved a podium finish in 1989, which he was able to improve again the following year.

In 1991 he won the first ITU World Cup on St. Croix , relegating the first two triathlon world champions Greg Welch and Mark Allen to second and third place.

Pigg was mainly characterized by his dominance in the second discipline, cycling. Because of his success, Pigg was often referred to as the "Big Fifth" alongside the "Big Four" Dave Scott , Mark Allen , Scott Tinley and Scott Molina .
