Arcata is a city in Humboldt County in the US state of California , United States , with 17,231 inhabitants (as of 2010). The urban area has a size of 28.6 km 2 .

The first settlement in the area was in 1850 with the name Uniontown. In August 1989, the Arcata electorate achieved that the urban area was recognized as a nuclear weapons-free zone and banned all nuclear weapons manufacturing activities in the urban area.

In 2003, a law was passed in Arcata which forbids local authorities to work with US federal agencies such as the FBI , the CIA or the immigration authorities if they want to carry out surveillance, arrest or deportation under the USA PATRIOT Act . The city is boycotting the 2001 Patriot Act, which the citizens of Arcata regard as unconstitutional.

The Humboldt State University is located in the city .

Arcata can be reached from the air via Arcata-Eureka Airport .

In Arcata, the US Green Party has the second highest number of members in California in a per capita comparison. Some city councils also belong to the Greens.
