McKinleyville is a statistical defined settlement area ( CDP ) in Humboldt County in the US state of California , United States , with a population of 15,177 (as of 2010 ). The geographical coordinates are: 40.95 ° North, 124.12 ° West.

The southern border of the town is the Mad River .

Arcata-Eureka Airport is located in the northern part of the village .

The post office first opened in 1903. Before that, there were several smaller settlements in the area, which were grouped together and named after US President William McKinley, who was assassinated in 1901 .
