Best list of American triathletes on the Ironman distance

The best list of American triathletes on the Ironman distance includes all times that American men worldwide in a triathlon over the long distance or Ironman distance (3.86 km swim, 180.2 km bike and 42.2 km Running). Each athlete is listed here with their personal best. Times of amateurs and professionals under 8:20:00 hours since October 1982 have been taken into account ^{(as of April 15, 2020)}

Criteria for the best times

Competitions in which only one duathlon was held due to the weather or partial distances were greatly shortened are not considered. An official measurement of the routes, as in athletics with the Jones counter , has not yet been done in triathlon.

Because of the fact that the lengths are not exactly the same, the races can hardly be compared seriously. Even with the same competition in different years, the times are only comparable to a limited extent due to route changes, construction sites, condition or changes in the road surface, relocations and changes in the transition areas. The times listed here are results that have been achieved in competitions with an official slipstream ban.

^[a] In 1988 Scott Molina tested positive for nandrolone after the Longue Distance de Nice triathlon - the later counter-analysis was also positive. Molina then lost Nike as its main sponsor and went to court to prove his innocence, and the lawsuit cost him around US $ 60,000. The French federation FFTRI banned Molina for one year, the American federation USAT , however, refrained from a ban due to the course of the tests, so that Molina could compete in the Ironman Hawaii four weeks later and win this competition. A world association responsible for international regulation was only founded in 1989.
