organization

The Ironman Louisville is part of the Ironman World Series of the World Triathlon Corporation . Until 2014, the participants had the opportunity to qualify here for the Triathlon World Championship on the long distance at the Ironman Hawaii . There were 50 starting places for amateurs. The Ironman Louisville has been held as a pure Abe Group competition since 2015 - this means that the winners do not receive any prize money and no qualification points are awarded for the Kona Pro ranking.

At the eighth edition of the competition on August 24, 2014, the Australian Chris McDonald achieved his fourth victory after the first edition in 2007 as well as 2011 and 2013, and the German Nina Kraft her third victory after 2009 and 2011.

After discussions in 2014 about a necessary shortening of the running route due to extreme heat, the date for 2015 was moved from August to October and thus to the cooler season. In addition, the Ironman Louisville 2015 and 2016 were organized as a purely amateur competition without prize money or qualification opportunities for professional triathletes. In the run-up to the 2015 event, there were massive discussions regarding potential dangers to athletes from the water quality.

The last Ironman Louisville was the 12th edition on October 14th, 2018. The swimming distance had to be shortened from 2.4 to 0.9 miles due to strong currents. The 14th edition, originally scheduled for October 11, 2020, had to be canceled in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic .
