Chris McDonald (born May 14, 1978 in Albury , New South Wales ) is a triathlete from Australia and six-time Ironman winner (2007-2014).
Career
Chris was the youngest of four children. Chris McDonald graduated from Albury High School. In 1999 he moved to New Zealand from Australia on business.
His father Neil and his two older brothers David and Daniel were active as triathletes, but it wasn't until the age of 23 that Chris started his first triathlon in 2001. He got his nickname "Big Sexy" because he decided to do this sport in 2001 as a rather overweight person. He was trained by Scott Molina (Ironman Hawaii winner, 1988).
In 2002 he started his first Ironman (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running) and since April 2004 he has been active as a professional triathlon.
Ironman winner 2007
In 2007 he won his first Ironman race in Louisville. His training partner is Justin Daerr .
In August 2013 he won the Ironman Louisville for the third time and only four weeks later the first Ironman Lake Tahoe .
Chris McDonald mainly starts on the long distance and at the Ironman Texas 2014 all three McDonald brothers stood at the start line together with their father and Chris finished fifth. In August 2014, with his fourth win at Ironman Louisville, he clinched his seventh win on the long distance. At the Ironman Hawaii in October 2017, the 39-year-old finished 36th among the professionals.
He is the founder of the Big Sexy Racing Team and is active there as a coach and trainer. Today he lives in Austin, Texas with his wife and three children .
