First held in 1993

The history of the Jeju International Triathlon goes back to 1993. On July 25, 1993, the Korea Tourism Organization - seven months before the Korea Triathlon Federation was founded on February 10, 1994 - organized the first Jeju International Triathlon. On July 24, 1994 and July 16, 1995 the event was held again.

On July 2, 2000, Ironman Asia took place on Jejudo as the only Asian qualifier for the Ironman Hawaii (Ironman World Championships) that year. The Jeju Provincial Government , the Korea Triathlon Federation (KTF) and the Korea National Tourism Organization took over the organization . Before that, starting places for Hawaii had already been allocated at the Ironman Japan at Lake Biwa from 1985 to 1997 , but after a typhoon in the days around the event in 1997, this competition no longer took place. 100 qualification places for the Ironman Hawaii were awarded in Seogwipo, for the professional triathletes 50,000 US dollars were announced, a total of 1036 registrations were received in 2001. The route stretched from the start at Jungmun Beach over two laps of swimming at 1.9 km, one cycle lap clockwise around Jejudo Island and two laps on a turning point route with the finish line in the Jeju World Cup Stadium in Seogwipo.

In 2001, four weeks after the second edition of Ironman Asia, another event took place on the neighboring Japanese island of Fukue-jima in Gotō, about 400 km southeast of Seogwipo, with the Ironman brand in the event name and 30 qualification places for Hawaii, the number of qualification places allocated in Seogwipo for the Ironman Hawaii were reduced to 70. 2002 instead of the Ironman Asia on Jeju approximately 600 km north in Sokcho the Ironman Korea with 850 participants and fifty qualifying spots for the Ironman Hawaii held.

Hallasan's crater on Jeju-do

The original idea of holding an Ironman Asia alternately in Japan and Korea on an annual basis was finally shelved in 2003. After organizational problems in Sokcho, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the demilitarized zone to North Korea , a triathlon was held on Jejudo for the third time with the Ironman brand in the event name, but this time as before in Sokcho under the name Ironman Korea.

In 2007, at the seventh edition of the Ironman label on Jejudo, a total of 200,000 US dollars in prize money was spent - after the Ironman Hawaii at the time, the highest prize money of all competitions under the Ironman brand . Amateurs were able to qualify for Hawaii over 48 qualification places and there were a total of 1152 athletes at the start. For professional triathletes only two slots were available, Chrissie Wellington , who then dominated the scene like no other woman before for several years, won her first competition over the Ironman distance here.

In 2004 the race had to be held as a duathlon on a shortened course without swimming.

In December 2007, the organizer and the WTC announced without giving any reason that the license agreement for the use of the Ironman trademark in the event name was not being extended. Instead, the Ironman China was held in Jixian from 2008 to 2010 . Meanwhile, the event on Jejudo was continued as Korea Triathlon Jeju from 2008 to 2010 , but the competition distances and routing remained unchanged.
When the Ironman Japan planned for June 13, 2010 in Gotō, about 400 km away, was canceled two weeks before its start due to an acute spread of foot and mouth disease , the fifty Hawaii slots planned for Gotō were instead awarded in Seogwipo, albeit exclusively to the 1250 athletes who had already been registered in Japan and were interested in re-registering.

They had the option of either participating “only” in the Korea Triathlon Jeju for the regular participation fee of US $ 170 - or having an additional chance to qualify for the Ironman Hawaii for almost three times the participation fee of US $ 500. In the event of a qualification, the entry fee of 550 US dollars for the Ironman Hawaii had to be paid directly when the slot was allocated on the day after the Korea Triathlon Jeju .

Held in 2011

In 2011 the triathlon was then - once again - organized under the name "Ironman Korea", with a competition over half the distance under the name Ironman 70.3 Korea being integrated at the same time . From 2012 to 2014 the race on Jejudo was then held as the Jeju International Triathlon . After some serious accidents occurred during the 2014 competition, a new bike course was initially promised, but there was no new event in 2015.

Resumption in 2017

In September 2017 the race was held again as "Ironman Korea" in Gurye in South Korea. This Ironman was held as an age group race without the participation of professional athletes.
The Austrian Thomas Frühwirth caused a sensation here , who as a paratriathlete was able to reach the goal after 8:36:57 h, almost an hour before the main field.

The event planned for September 22, 2019 had to be canceled due to weather conditions.

Winners list

From 2000 to 2001 the long distance triathlon was held as Ironman Asia , from 2003 to 2007 and 2011 as Ironman Korea , from 2008 to 2010 as Korea Triathlon Jeju and 2012 to 2014 as Jeju International Triathlon . In 2002 the Ironman Korea took place about 600 km north in Sokcho.
