Thomas Frühwirth (born August 12, 1981 in Edelsbach ) is an Austrian athlete who is active in Paratriathlon and as a handbiker in Paracycling .
Career
Thomas Frühwirth was born on a farm in southeast Styria ; he has three brothers. He started enduro sports at the age of 15 . He completed an apprenticeship as a car mechanic and car electrician, worked in development at Steyr Daimler Puch and later at motorcycle manufacturer KTM AG . In 2004 he had a motorcycle accident while on vacation in Poland. The result was incomplete paraplegia .
Athletic career
Thomas Frühwirth has been active in disabled sports since 2008, initially primarily in the paratriathlon, which consists of swimming, a handbike race and another race in a wheelchair or on foot, depending on the type of disability.
In 2010, 2011 and 2015 he became world champion in ironman competitions in the paraduathlon and triathlon. In 2014 he and Manfred Putz won the Race Across America in the handbike category.
In 2016 Frühwirth was nominated for the Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro . There were plans to start in the handbike road race, in the time trial and in the relay. In the individual time trial he won silver.
At the European Triathlon Championships in June 2017 in Kitzbühel, Frühwirth won the silver medal for Austria in the first competition. At the beginning of September 2017 he set a new world record in the paratriathlon over 7:48 hours at the Austria Triathlon in Podersdorf am Neusiedlersee (3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling and 42.195 km running). He was faster here than the winner in the main competition.
