The Antwerp Ironman 70.3 was part of the Ironman 70.3 triathlon racing series of the World Triathlon Corporation . Worldwide, the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC for short) awards races over a distance of 1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running. The name is derived from the total distance of 70.3 miles (113 km) in a race.
It was first held in Antwerp in 2006 - as a continuation of the Marc Herremans Classic that took place here in 2004 and 2005.
The course record was set by Belgian Marino Vanhoenacker in 2009 with a winning time of 3:41:45 hours. In 2011 the two Belgian starters Sofie Goos and Bart Aernouts were able to defend their titles from the previous year.
The last race was held here on July 22, 2012
Marc Herremans is a Belgian triathlete who finished sixth in the 2001 Ironman World Championship in Hawaii. In 2002 he had a serious accident while training and became paraplegic. He subsequently started successfully on the Ironman distance - with just his arm strength.
