Rutger Beke (born August 8, 1977 in Halle ) is a former Belgian triathlete and multiple Ironman winner (2007, 2009).

Career

As a 17-year-old Rutger Beke came to triathlon. In 1996 and 1997 he was the Belgian National Youth Triathlon Champion.

In 2002 he was third at the World Long Distance Championship in Nice

Ironman Hawaii 2003

In 2003 he was runner-up at the Ironman Hawaii (Ironman World Championships).

Beke also got into the media because of his alleged doping abuse : he was tested positive for EPO in the A and B tests in 2004 and banned for 18 months. A year later, the University of Leuven provided evidence that it was not positive. The Belgian had an underactive kidney due to hard training. This released proteins into the urine, which falsified the test. A Belgian court finally acquitted the triathletes. Claims for damages against the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the two laboratories involved are ongoing.

In May 2011 he announced the end of his active career after eight years as a professional athlete.
