Wildflower triathlon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wildflower Triathlon is one since 1983 annual spring triathlon -Sportveranstaltung at Lake San Antonio in the US state of California in the United States .

organization

The Wildflower Triathlon started in 1983 with 86 participants in addition to a 10 km run as part of a bluegrass festival with music and handicrafts. In the second year the number of participants rose to 200 athletes, but the event initially remained in deficit. In 1986, in addition to the previous triathlon with a total distance of 100 km, a sprint triathlon was integrated, the number of participants rose to 350. Since then, a large number of students from Cal Pol in San Luis Obispo have been volunteers. Stars like Scott Molina and Paula Newby-Fraser provided the event with attention and increased attendance. The Wildflower Triathlon became one of the qualifying competitions for the Ironman Hawaii in the USA (none of which had the “Ironman” trademark in the event name until 1999), with the number of participants increasing by 20 percent annually.

In 1989, the length of the main competition was changed to 1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running, which has been maintained to this day. In addition, a cross triathlon was integrated for the first time in addition to the sprint. For the first time there were more than a thousand participants at the start. In 1991 the sprint triathlon was changed to an Olympic distance, where the US student championships were held for ten years from 1994. Terry Davis and his wife Betsy founded the company Tri California to take care of the event full-time from now on. In 1997, more than 3,000 participants were counted for the first time. In 1999 - for the first time no longer as a qualifier for Hawaii - there were over 4,000 athletes for the first time and by 2006 the number of participants rose continuously to 7,500.

With around 7,500 athletes and 30,000 spectators, this competition is one of the world's largest triathlon events. The race has been held annually on the first weekend in May since 1983 on the middle distance and the distances are equal to

  • 1.9 km swimming,
  • 90 km cycling and
  • 21.1 km run.

At the same time, a competition over the Olympic distance (1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running) and a cross triathlon are held here every year.

2014 became an environmental challenge in the history of the Wildflower Triathlon: The water level in Lake San Antonio had fallen continuously over the years and was ten meters lower than in previous years. As a result, swimming was relocated to Harris Creek, a campsite two miles away. After swimming, the athletes put on their shoes, ran the two miles to the transition area and completed the usual 90-km cycle lap. The final run was shortened by two miles.

In 2015 it was the 33rd edition. A planned event in 2017 had to be canceled due to the persistent drought. In May 2018 the race was held for the 35th time with over 1,200 starters as the Wildflower Triathlon Experience .

Course records

Paula Newby-Fraser has already won five times here and the American Jesse Thomas won here for the sixth time in a row in 2016.

New Zealander Terenzo Bozzone holds the course record with 3:53:43 h (2006). In the women's category , the American Heather Jackson set the course record with her winning time from 2012 with 4:26:29 h.
