James Cunnama (born April 27, 1983 in Pietermaritzburg ) is a South African triathlete . He is European champion in the long-distance triathlon (2012) and three-time Ironman winner (2010, 2017, 2019).

Career

James Cunnama studied in the Metropolitan Municipality Nelson Mandela Bay at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University . He started his first triathlon in 2005.

In November 2010 he achieved his first triathlon victory on the Ironman distance in Florida (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running).

European champion triathlon long distance 2012

In July 2012, he won the long-distance European Triathlon Championship and, with his victory at Challenge Roth, he ranked 14th in the list of world best times.

Since the beginning of 2015 he starts for the newly founded Bahrain Elite Endurance Triathlon Team , which is led by Chris McCormack .

In February 2016 he started in South Africa as part of the Xterra racing series in the cross triathlon for the first time and took second place. In France he won the Embrunman in the long distance triathlon in August . In 2016 he was able to qualify again for a starting place at Ironman Hawaii , together with seven other athletes from his team: With the two defending champions Daniela Ryf and Jan Frodeno , with his fiancée Jodie Swallow , Terenzo Bozzone , David Pleše , Brent McMahon and Ben Hoffman . He was ranked 26th in October.
James Cunnama has been married to the British triathlete Jodie Cunnama (* 1981) since December 2016 and lives in Port Elizabeth .

In August 2017, the then 34-year-old won his second Ironman victory at the first Ironman Hamburg . At the Ironman Hawaii in October, he finished fifth.

At the Ironman Hawaii 2018, he finished 17th. In June 2019, he won his third Ironman race with Ironman France .
