The Walchsee-Kaiserwinkl Challenge is a half-distance triathlon event (1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21 km running). It has been held annually in late summer since 2010 in the municipality of Walchsee in Kaiserwinkl in Tyrol and is part of the Challenge Triathlon World Series .
history
The Walchsee-Kaiserwinkl Challenge was held for the first time in 2010.
At the premiere, 766 individual starters and 65 relays started. The Dutch Yvonne van Vlerken , who lived in Austria, and the Austrian Michael Weiss , who lived in the USA at the time, were able to win the first edition. In 2012 and 2014 the Austrian Triathlon Association held the state championships in the middle distance.
The Italian Giulio Molinari won the race three times in a row from 2014 to 2016. In 2016, the European Triathlon Union held the (ETU) European Championship on the middle distance here.
In 2017, the swimming and cycling routes had to be shortened due to the bad weather.
The last Challenge Walchsee-Kaiserwinkl took place on June 30, 2019. In addition to the triathlon, an aquabike race was held here for the first time (1.9 km swimming and 90 km cycling).
The Challenge St. Pölten, Challenge Walchsee-Kaiserwinkl and Challenge Davos will join forces in 2020 in what is known as the “Challenge the Alps”.
After 2016, Walchsee was again awarded the contract to host the ETU European Championships on the middle distance from June 25 to 28, 2020. In addition to the European Triathlon Championships, the European Aquabike Championships (swimming and cycling) should also be held here. However, the event originally planned in June 2020 had to be canceled in April due to the spread of the coronavirus .
Route
- The swimming distance of 1.9 km goes over a lap in Walchsee .
