Yvonne van Vlerken (born November 5, 1978 in Krimpen aan de Lek ) is a former Dutch duathlete and triathlete living in Austria . She is world champion on the long-distance duathlon (2006), multiple Ironman winner (2009-2017) and two-time ETU European champion on the long-distance triathlon (2017, 2019). With 8:45:48 hours she held the world best time (Challenge Roth, 2008) over the long distance, until this was undercut again on July 12, 2009 by Chrissie Wellington in Roth .
Career
In her youth, Yvonne van Vlerken was active in the South Holland football team, she later began with duathlon and finally in 2000 also with triathlon. She is multiple Dutch champion in duathlon and triathlon.
World champion duathlon 2006
In 2005 she became vice European champion in the long distance duathlon and in 2006 she was able to secure the title of European champion here.
July 13, 2008 at Challenge Roth near Nuremberg could the previous world best of 8:45:48 in triathlon with Hours Paula Newby-Fraser undercut and October 11, 2008 at her first start in Hawaii, she reached behind the last year's winner Chrissie Wellington to second place (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.2 km running).
Winner Ironman-70.3 European Championships 2011
In November 2012, at her first start for Austria with a new personal best, she won her third Ironman gold medal in Florida - the second Ironman gold medal for Austria after Kate Allen (2003, 2005). In November 2014 she was able to win the Ironman Florida for the third time in a row and she got her seventh victory in the long distance triathlon.
Yvonne van Vlerken starts for the Tri Team Lustenau . She was trained after 2009 by Mark Allen and today by Siri Lindley with a team of consultants and coaches. After five years of unsuccessful application for Austrian citizenship, according to her own statement, she ended this effort in 2015 and starts again for the Netherlands. In July 2015 she won the Challenge Roth for the third time after 2007 and 2008 and in August she won the first Ironman Maastricht-Limburg .
In February 2016 she won the Challenge Wanaka on the long distance .
European champion long distance triathlon 2017 and 2019
The then 38-year-old won the Challenge Almere-Amsterdam with a new course record in September 2017 , her sixth race on the Challenge long distance and thus became ETU European Champion and national champion on the Triathlon long distance. In September she was able to win her eighth Ironman race after 2015 with the Ironman Barcelona and set a new course record. In 2017 she won the Challenge Family's “European Bonus Ranking” .
In September 2019 she became the ETU European Champion Long Distance Triathlon for the second time at the Challenge Almere-Amsterdam . The then 40-year-old declared her active time over after the race.
Yvonne van Vlerken has been married to the German triathlete Per Bittner (* 1985) since July 2018 . The Austrian by choice now lives in Schwarzach in Vorarlberg . Their nicknames are "Dutch Dynamo" or "Vonsy".
Awards
- In 2008 she was voted “Triathlete of the Year” for the third time in her home country.
- In 2010 she was elected “Sportswoman of the Year” in Rotterdam alongside soccer player Giovanni van Bronckhorst .
