Ironman 70.3 Kraichgau has been the name of a triathlon event over the half or middle distance in Kraichgau in the northwest of Baden-Württemberg since 2015, starting at Hardtsee near Ubstadt-Weiher and finishing in Bad Schönborn . Before that, the event was held from 2009 to 2014 under the name Challenge Kraichgau and from 2006 to 2008 as the Kraichgau Triathlon Festival .

organization

The Challenge Kraichgau, in the "Land of 1000 Hills", was held for the first time in June 2009 as a continuation of the Kraichgau Triathlon Festival - as part of the worldwide Challenge Family competition series with triathlon competitions over the long and half distance.

In 2012, the European Triathlon Union (ETU) held the Middle Distance European Championships as part of the Kraichgau Challenge . In 2013 and 2014 the German Triathlon Union (DTU) hosted the German championships in the middle distance here.

At the end of October 2013, the American company WTC , owner of the rights u. a. on the trademarks "Ironman" and "Ironman 70.3", the purchase of the previous organizer of the triathlon, Kraichgau Sports UG . Its founder and owner Björn Steinmetz, at the same time President of the Baden-Würthemberg Triathlon Association, as spokesman for the regional associations, member of the Presidium of the German Triathlon Union and, together with the organizer of the world's largest long-distance triathlon Challenge Roth , Felix Walchshöfer, responsible for organizing the challenge Family series, became European managing director of the WTC. The WTC, which had previously acquired other organizers of the Challenge Family series such as USM Events as the organizer of Challenge Cairns or YWC Sports ApS as the organizer of Challenge Copenhagen and Challenge Aarhus and which from then on advertised them under their Ironman brand regardless of the existing contracts of the acquired organizers, announced that the event would be hosted under the name Ironman 70.3 Kraichgau from 2014 . At the same time, the Challenge Rügen , previously initiated by the Challenge Family as a new triathlon event , which should also have been organized by Steinmetz, was announced for 2014 as Ironman 70.3 Rügen .

The contract between Kraichgau Sports UG and Challenge Family included u. a. a non-competition clause with a blocking period for switching to a direct competitor of the Challenge Family. The Challenge Family insisted on the fulfillment of the contract, which is why the WTC - although the world's largest competitor of the Challenge Family - held the event in 2014 under the established name Challenge Kraichgau . The WTC taught for the first time both an event with the Challenge logo as well - because in this respect existed with the German Triathlon Union prior to the acquisition agreements - raced slipstream share as German Championship of the elite, the same station of the Triathlon Bundesliga was made .

In 2014, the hedge fund- owned WTC put significant legal pressure on the mayors of the communities across which the triathlon runs. According to the lawyers of the Challenge Family, the threatened claims for damages by the WTC were unfounded, but would have embroiled the communities in a time-consuming and costly legal dispute. In order to avoid this, the municipalities issued a regulatory approval under the new event name Ironman 70.3 Kraichgau.

In 2015, the event was held for the first time under the name Ironman 70.3 Kraichgau - with largely unchanged routing. The participation fee, which in 2012 was € 160, has been increased by the WTC by over 60% to € 260 (incl. 6% service fee) for the event, which is largely unchanged except for the name and logo. The Olympic distance competition, which has also been part of the event since 2006, has been named 5i50 Kraichgau by the WTC since 2014 .

As of 2015, the Challenge Family waived their contractual claims, instead they signed a contract with the organizer of the City Triathlon Heilbronn , which was also held in Kraichgau until 2014 , and which will be the follow-up event of the Challenge Kraichgau within the Challenge Family from 2015 as Challenge Heilbronn Series became.

The event originally planned for June 7, 2020 was canceled in March due to the spread of the coronavirus and postponed to an as yet unknown date.

The half distance (also middle distance) consists of a swimming course over 1.9 km in the Hardtsee, a demanding, profiled bike stage with approx. 1000 hm over 90 km and a half marathon over 21.1 km, which are held one after the other. Together these are the eponymous 70.3 miles.
