32nd Leipzig Marathon 2008

The Leipzig Marathon (official spelling Leipzig Marathon ) is a marathon run in Leipzig . It has been held since 1977 and has been held in April since 2000. The organizer and host are the Leipzig Marathon e. V. and the Stadtsportbund Leipzig e. V. The program also includes a half marathon , a 10 km run, a half marathon for inline skaters , a wheelchair half marathon and a school relay.

route

Since 2007, the start and finish has been at the Sportforum , near the Arena Leipzig and the central stadium . The route initially leads past the New Town Hall and then passes Augustusplatz with the Gewandhaus , the Opera House and the City Tower . Afterwards it goes past the Grassimuseum , the old fair Leipzig and the Völkerschlachtdenkmal in the district Probstheida . There the route turns to the west, passes the Bruno-Plache-Stadion and reaches the Südvorstadt via the Zwickauer and Richard-Lehmann-Straße along the Media City Leipzig . The route then crosses the Leipzig floodplain forest and continues to Schleußig and over the White Elster to Kleinzschocher , where it turns north and returns to the Sportforum via Plagwitz and Jahnallee .

history

Predecessor events

On September 5, 1897, the Leipzig Club Sportbrüder organized a "40 km distance run". The marathon had only been created a year earlier as an athletic discipline for the Summer Olympics in 1896 , and so this run was the first marathon on German soil. The route ran from Paunsdorf to Bennewitz and back. Of the 26 registered runners, 18 started and 13 crossed the finish line. The winner was Theodor Schöffler from VfB Leipzig in 3:35:31 hours.

On July 3 of the following year, another “40 km distance race” took place on the same route, also organized by the Sport Brothers . All 13 runners reached the finish line, Arthur Techtow from BFV Arminia-Urania zu Berlin was first in 3:19:50 with a lead of almost 15 minutes. For a long time this run was thought to be the first marathon organized in Germany, and it was not until 1998, on the occasion of the supposed 100th anniversary of the Leipzig marathon, that attention was drawn to the run held the previous year.

On September 6, 1925, the first official German marathon championship was held between Halle and Leipzig on a 42.2 km long route. Paul Hempel was the winner in 2:48:26 hours. Shortly before, on August 30, 1925, the first German marathon championship for gymnastics had taken place in Leipzig. On a slightly shorter loop course (the information varies between 40 and 41.48 km) Johannes Theuerkauf won in 2:37:38 hours. Before the Second World War , three more marathons took place in Leipzig: on August 17, 1930 another German gymnastics championship (42.2 km; winner: Josef Sehr, 2:46:50 h), on October 16, 1938 a commemorative run for the 125th anniversary of the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig (42.195 km; winner: Hans Puch, 2:43:42 h), which with 84 runners at the finish was the event with the largest number of participants at the time, and another German championship on July 30, 1939. This run should serve as preparation for the 1940 Summer Olympics . Ernst Weber won at 30 ° C in 2:47:19 h.

Seven marathons took place in Leipzig between 1951 and 1959: five marathon championships in the GDR , a marathon for the 2nd German Gymnastics and Sports Festival in 1956, and a marathon as part of the 1st Summer Partakiade of the friendly armies . Further GDR championships took place in Leipzig as independent events in 1971 and 1979, as well as 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1990 integrated into the Leipzig Marathon.

Today's marathon

Start of the II. SME marathon on June 22, 1985 with 821 runners on what was then Karl-Marx-Platz (today Augustusplatz )
Jörg Peter at the 2nd KMU marathon 1985, where he won the GDR championship that was held at the same time
Uwe Koch won the GDR marathon championship in 1986 as part of the SME marathon

Fun races became increasingly popular across Europe in the 1970s. In 1975 the Rennsteiglauf took place as a competition for the first time, with almost 700 runners at the finish of the 82 km long main course. Waldemar Cierpinski's victory at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal also contributed to popularizing running in the GDR.

The HSG KMU (University Sports Association of Karl Marx University ) therefore launched an event that was intended to give less ambitious amateur runners the opportunity to master the classic 42.195 km route. For this reason, the finish line, which was three hours in athletic competitions, was extended to five hours. At the first edition of the university marathon on June 18, 1977 in Clara-Zetkin-Park , 95 runners and three runners reached the finish.

In the next two years, eight laps were run in Clara-Zetkin-Park. In 1980 the run, now called the KMU marathon , was relocated to the Leipzig floodplain forest near Connewitz . As in the next two years, there were six laps to be completed. In 1982 wheelchair users took part in the marathon for the first time .

From 1983 the start and finish were in the city center, but the majority of the route was covered, as in the first events, in the Clara-Zetkin-Park, where a number of laps had to be completed which varied from year to year. From 1985 to 1987 the GDR marathon championship was integrated into the run.

During the first run after the fall of the Wall , the city center was more closely integrated into the route than before. The organizers of the HSG KMU took part in the Leipzig Marathon e. V. merged, and in Manfred Steffny they found a prominent West German athlete who helped to make the run more professional and raised the bar. The Deutsche Bundesbahn acted as the main sponsor and announced a German Marathon Cup , which also included the Munich and Frankfurt marathons . The last GDR marathon championship also took place as part of the DB Marathon Leipzig (as the run was now called). With 1598 marathon finishers a record number was reached. For the first time, a 10 km run was part of the supporting program.

In 1992 the Federal Railroad ended its involvement due to a decline in the number of participants. Without financially strong sponsors it was not possible to continue the event as a city run , and so the Leipzig Marathon , as it was now called, ran from 1993 to 1997 as a four-lap course in the Auenwald near Leutzsch . In 1993, time was measured for the first time by transponder . As an additional competition, a half marathon was now held and, from 1994, a quarter marathon or a 10 km run.

On the occasion of the 100 years of athletics in Germany , the run was moved back to the city and the Clara-Zetkin-Park in 1998. For the first time came Stadtwerke Leipzig as a sponsor on, and from 2000 to 2004, the race was the official name of Stadtwerke Leipzig Marathon .

A four-lap course was run from 1998 to 2001, a three-lap course in 2002 and a two-lap course in 2003. In 2002 a half marathon for inline skaters was added to the Leipzig Marathon program. In 2004, in the run-up to Leipzig's application for the 2012 Summer Olympics, a large, Olympic-suitable round through the whole of Leipzig was presented, starting on Jahnallee and finishing in the interior of the Arena Leipzig . The number of marathon finishers rose to the second-highest number to date of 780, and impressive course records were achieved by signing top runners. In 2008, entry fees for top athletes were waived for the first time; this year and the years that followed, mostly runners won again from the region.

After the failed Olympic bid, the construction work for the 2006 World Cup had priority, so that in 2005 the start and finish of the run was relocated to the Alte Messe Leipzig and a loop was allowed to run away from the city between Dölitz in the south and Gohlis in the north. In 2006 the start and finish was at the Kohlrabi circus , and a two-lap course through the southeastern outskirts of the city had to be tackled.

The Stadtsportbund Leipzig e. V. at the alignment. In 2007 OSL Olympia-Sport Leipzig GmbH was added. In the same year it was possible to reintegrate the city center into the course.

In 2020, the Leipzig Marathon was canceled for the first time in its history due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

Further marathons in Leipzig since 1977
