The Auensee is a 12 hectare lake in the northwest of the city of Leipzig in the district of Wahren . The lake is part of the floodplain forest that extends all around and through Leipzig. The Auensee House is the meeting point for culture and concerts .

Waters

Auensee, east bank

The Auensee lies between the White Elster and the Neue Luppe . It emerged from a gravel pit in which the Willybald Hoffmann company mined the gravel for the construction of Leipzig Central Station . In 1908 the bank for real estate Leipzig planned to convert this pit into a “large water system” with a park for amusement purposes. The pit was therefore connected and flooded with Hundewasser , a tributary of the White Elster, from 1913 onwards , and it became very silty. The resulting water was named "Auensee". The dog water touched the Auensee on its north bank and thus provided for inflow and outflow. Due to the construction of the Neue Luppe, completed in 1934, the dog water was interrupted and filled in the same year. Since then, the lake has no more inflows and outflows, but is fed by groundwater .

The mean depth of the lake is 3 meters, the deepest point is 8 meters. The lake mainly has steep banks with various deciduous trees ( willow , birch and beech plants ). Only the east and northeast banks are flat and without trees.

The vegetation includes various marsh and aquatic plants, especially pipe and bur-reed , potamogetonaceae and sweet and sour grasses .

The water quality of the Auensee was questionable from the end of the 1970s, so that in 1979 a bathing ban even had to be imposed due to the risk of salmonella, which still exists today. It has improved again in recent years, but the lake is to be assessed as hypertrophic , its condition is unstable and the visibility is less than one meter.

The lake is home to carp , pike , pikeperch , eel and various white fish . The lake is leased by the German Angler Association and is used by the Leipzig-Gohlis e. V. maintained.

At the beginning of August 2008 there was another major fish death . The reason for this was a lack of oxygen caused by constant exposure to the sun , lack of rain and low air pressure . In addition, the strong wind brought oxygen-poor layers of water to the surface. The sensitive pikeperch were first affected by the death, then pike, bream and grass carp weighing up to 15 kg . In total, several tons of fish carcasses were removed from the water. As soon as the fish death became known, pumps were immediately installed to improve the oxygen content. Live fish were fished and relocated to the White Elster , as they feared total extinction.

In order to improve the quality of the water in the long term, three deep water aeration systems (TIBEAN) will be used from spring 2012 for the next ten years , with the help of which oxygen is to be supplied to the lake.

Park railway

In 1914 an amusement park, the Luna Park , was established here . This was foreclosed in 1931. All that remained of him was the main restaurant, which was renamed Haus Auensee in 1936 . Today it is mainly used for concerts. Until 2020, the Auenseebrücke also reminded of the park. The bridge spanned a bay on the north shore of the lake. Originally the Auensee was connected to the White Elster here via the dog water. The Luna Express, a small train running around the lake, therefore needed a bridge. The bridge became obsolete with the closure and demolition of the insolvent Luna Park and the filling of the dog water in 1934, but it was still accessible until the early 1980s and was only demolished in 2020.

Since 1951, a miniature railway , the Leipziger Parkeisenbahn , has been running around the Auensee . Today's railway was operated as a pioneer railway until the fall of the Berlin Wall ; since 1990 it has been called the Park Railway .

There is a boat and bicycle rental service at the lake.

Camping & Motel Auensee has been located near Lake Auensee, only separated from it by Gustav-Esche-Strasse , since 1969 .

Sports

The Auensee is a popular meeting point for runners. From 1980 to 1990, the Auenseemarathon a Marathon took place in April each year, over 4 rounds in Leipzig floodplain forest, as the second Leipzig marathon alongside the existing since 1977 Leipzig Marathon . Since 1990, in September and (since 1997) August, the Leipzig 100 km run (also known as the 100 km run on Lake Auensee), which is also a 50 km running competition , has taken place on the same route, but over 10 laps includes. The host is the Laufclub Auensee e. V. Leipzig , this organizes several shorter running competitions spread over the year, as well as a practically weekly running meeting for everyone at the Auensee.
