The Lindenau harbor in the Schönau district of Leipzig is part of the Elster-Saale Canal project . In 2015 it was connected to the Karl Heine Canal , which has a connection to the White Elster . Contrary to its name, the port is not in the Lindenau district .

history

Construction began in May 1938. In the spring of 1943, work was stopped, with large parts, including three storage houses, the port railway system and the connection to the PX industrial railway , having already been completed. The connections to the Elster-Saale Canal and the Karl-Heine Canal, however, were unfinished. As a result, the port was not accessible by water until 2015.

Provided were two envelope - docks , each with a length of 1000 meters, a width of 90 meters and a depth of six meters, and two industrial ports north of the envelope pool.

Until the 1990s, the already completed storage and warehouse buildings of the port were used. Since then, the buildings on the almost 40 hectare site have been falling into disrepair. The port area was intended in Leipzig's application to host the 2012 Olympic Games for the Olympic Village .

As part of the “Water City Leipzig” project, work is again being carried out on expanding the Lindenau harbor and connecting it to the European waterway network . The use should be primarily in the tourist and leisure area. The port, the Karl Heine Canal and the Elster-Saale Canal are to be expanded, renewed or completed. The Saale-Elster-Kanal Förderverein , which has existed since 2007, has the same goal . On July 18, 2012, the extension of the Karl Heine Canal to the port was decided by the city council. The first groundbreaking ceremony for the connection took place on September 13, 2012 by Mayor Burkhard Jung .

18 million euros are to be built into the project by 2015, from which not only the city administration is hoping to have effects on urban development in the west of Leipzig. The municipality has to contribute around 3.8 million euros from its own budget, 7.6 million euros are to be gained from the sale of land on Plautstrasse. The rest of the costs are financed with subsidies, including from the EU urban development fund "Jessica".

On January 29, 2015, the flooding of the 665-meter-long connection between the Karl-Heine Canal and the Lindenau harbor began. The process was completed on schedule three weeks later. On July 2, 2015, the extension of the Karl Heine Canal was inaugurated.

Before the 75-meter-long connection to the Elster-Saale Canal can be established, a barrage for high and low waterfalls must be built in the Karl Heine Canal south of the Luisenbrücke.
