The Krebsgraben is a creek in the southwest of Leipzig . It is a tributary of the White Elster . In terms of water law, it is a second order body of water . Until the 19th century it was called Luppe or southern Luppe.
The Krebsgraben begins east of Großschkorlopp, a district of Kitzen , which was incorporated into Pegau in 2012 . After passing through the village, it flows northeast and crosses Knautnaundorf . On a map from 1806, it then flowed through three ponds, the Upper, the Lower and the Bornteich, before flowing into the Elstermühlgraben near Hartmannsdorf . The ponds are no longer listed on maps from the end of the 19th century. For the 17th century it is reported that water was taken from the Elsterfloßgraben and fed to the Luppe to ensure a safe water supply for the ponds in Eisdorf.
When the area of the Weißen Elster was claimed by the Zwenkau opencast mine and the resulting relocation of the Weißen Elster to the west in the 1970s, the Krebsgraben got a new mouth, now directly into the White Elster east of the Knautnaundorf industrial area, which is secured by a backflow valve . In the event of a flood, excess water is discharged via a pipeline into the Knauthainer Elstermühlgraben , the northern part of the Elstermühlgraben interrupted by the opencast mine.
When Knautnaundorf was incorporated into Leipzig in 1999, the Krebsgraben became a river of Leipzig. The length of the Krebsgraben is 7.57 kilometers, of which 1.98 kilometers run in the city of Leipzig.
The Krebsgraben is not always water-bearing, which is mainly due to the lowering of the groundwater level by the former Zwenkau opencast mine. It primarily serves to drain the fields west of Knautnaundorf.
