Old Elster (Leipzig)
The Alte Elster in the urban area of Leipzig was a natural arm that ran its course at the wedding weir near the Schreberbad, flowed along the far eastern edge of the Frankfurt meadows - at the same time the western development boundary of the Waldstrasse district - and finally merged with the Elstermühlgraben in the floodplain forest .
history
The natural course of the Alte Elster was straightened around 1854 by the hydraulic engineers Kohl and Georgi for the purpose of flood regulation. From this point on, it served as a faster drainage of the floods that frequently occurred in the Frankfurt meadows. In flood-free times, on the other hand, the course of the river carried very little water, which is why it was also called the "lazy Elster".
Joachim Ringelnatz (* 1883; † 1934) lived in his childhood on the street "An der Alten Elster", which is located directly on the river. Later he wrote about this time:
When the poplars on the bank of
the river bent terribly in the storm
, how scared my little child was!
Threatening yellow is drawn below the river. ...
After the Elster basin to the west was completed in 1922 , the Alte Elster had largely lost its intended use. It was therefore backfilled until 1926, for which, among other things, the excavation of the underground exhibition center was used. Its former course was marked with a double-row linden avenue.
Since 2003, the Free State of Saxony and the City of Leipzig have been planning to rebuild the Alte Elster, partly with a slightly different course, due to the ongoing silting of the Elster Basin for the purpose of flood protection between Marschnerbrücke and Leutzscher-Allee-Brücke of the Elstermühlgraben.
