The Schreberbad is the oldest swimming pool in Leipzig that is still in use . The 2.53 hectare site is located west of Leipzig's old town. The name of the bath refers to the oldest allotment garden in Germany located in the immediate vicinity .

history

The emergence of the allotment bath is closely related to the closure of the Elster mill race located Neuber Chen swimming and baths together, the 1866 because of the construction of the Karl-Heine canal was required. A public limited company was therefore founded to set up a new swimming pool and bathing establishment. The location chosen was an area on the Elstermühlgraben, which was gained in the course of straightening the Alte Elster .

The complex, designed according to plans by the architect Heinrich Dimpfel , opened its doors on July 8, 1866. At first, the bath, which had a 95 m long and 28 m wide swimming pool, was only accessible to men. On May 16, 1869, Germany's first open-air women's swimming pool opened on the site and existed until the 1940s. The maintenance of the bath facilities, which were mainly made of wood, proved to be too expensive in the 1880s. Therefore the facility was redesigned according to plans by Max Pommer and reopened in 1890.

In an air raid on Leipzig in 1944, the women's pool was completely destroyed. After the end of the Second World War , the remaining part was reconstructed.

Since the opening of the Cospudener See for bathing in 2000, the Schreberbad has seen fewer visitors. In addition, there was the partially dilapidated condition of the facility, which was noticeable in a leaky swimming pool, among other things. In order to remedy these deficiencies and to increase the attractiveness of the pool, the facility was redesigned in 2006 for 1.7 million euros. In 2007 the pool was reopened with two new swimming pools with a total water area of around 650 m², a slide and a play and beach volleyball court.

The Schreberbad is operated by the municipal Sportbäder Leipzig GmbH .
