Christian Adolf Eltzner (born June 26, 1816 in Leipzig ; † September 6, 1891 there ) was a German copper and steel engraver , draftsman and photographer .

Life

Eltzner was the son of a master tanner . He first learned to be a carpenter, traveled to many cities in Europe as a journeyman from 1836 and returned to Leipzig in 1840. There he completed a second apprenticeship as a steel engraver. In 1846 he started his own business and ran a steel engraving workshop at Zeitzer Straße 9. Eltzner specialized in the representation of city views from a bird's eye view . His bird gazing on the basis of city maps and city floor plans appeared mainly in the Illustrirten Zeitung and in the illustrated family paper Die Gartenlaube . His steel engravings were mostly published by the Albert Henry Payne Art Institute .

Eltzner's bird charts are verifiable from numerous cities, e. B. from Hamburg , Bremen , Hanover , Kassel , Stettin , Augsburg or Nuremberg . He created bird charts, panoramic views and over 200 small vedutas (mainly colored pen and ink drawings and watercolors ) of city quarters, squares and buildings of the Leipzig cityscape and thus became an exact city chronicler of the second half of the 19th century. Since the mid-1850s, he was increasingly active as a photographer.
