The Kleine Pleiße is a watercourse that is fed by excess water from the Markkleeberger See and flows into the Pleiße . It is to be distinguished from a tributary of the same name of the Pleiße near Rötha . In terms of water law, it is a second order body of water.

course

For most of its course, the Kleine Pleiße follows the old bed of the Pleiße before it was laid in 1969 as a result of the advancing lignite open-cast mine Espenhain , but mostly with a reduced cross-section due to backfilling.

Coming from the outlet structure on the Markkleeberger See, it follows the western boundary of Markkleeberg-Ost. There are crossings under the Mühlstrasse (Mühlbrücke), the S46 (Seenallee) and the Kirchstrasse at the level of the rectory and the old fishery. It continues to flow through the agra-Park Markkleeberg with further crossings, whereupon it is part of Leipzig in the wood south of the Mühlpleiße over a length of about 160 meters. Shortly before it empties into the underwater of the AGRA weir, it crosses under federal highway 2 and into a culvert the Mühlpleiße. The latter is branched off from the headwater of the weir.

use

In addition to ensuring the drainage of excess water from the Markkleeberger See, the Kleine Pleiße should also be expanded for tourist traffic in order to enable the navigable connection from the Pleiße to the Markkleeberger See as part of course 5 in the Leipzig waterway network. Due to various conflicts of use, however, this idea was not pursued any further. Instead, an additional connection was planned from the lake to the Pleiße, which should run for 1.4 kilometers between Bundesstraße 2 and Kleiner Pleiße. This section is known as the Markkleeberger water snake.

After ten years of planning, the Leipziger Neeseenland steering group decided on September 28, 2018 not to pursue the previous 2.4 million euro plans for the water snake. Instead, alternative variants should be checked again. Prior to this, the State Office of Saxony had identified serious deficiencies in several points and suggested that the planning be withdrawn.

By mid-2014, a pumping station was built next to the outflow structure of the Markkleeberger See. Due to the persistent lack of precipitation, the LMBV began in July 2018 for the first time to pump up to 1.5 million cubic meters of water from the Störmthaler See over the Markkleeberger See into the Kleine Pleiße in order to increase the flow rate in the Leipzig water junction.
