The Bauerngraben is a left tributary of the Neue Luppe . It flows exclusively in the Leipzig city area and is a water body of the second order under water law .

The Bauerngraben rises in Lindenau in an allotment garden near Rietschelstrasse and is fed by several underground road gullies. It initially runs north, receives about 0.2 m³ / s of water from the Burgauenbach at Gustav-Esche-Straße in Leutzsch and then changes its direction of flow to the northwest. The Bauerngraben maintains this until it reaches the former river bed of the Luppe north of the Alfred Kunze Sports Park , which it flows through over a length of 450 meters.

Then the Bauerngraben divides into two arms. While the Alte Luppe , which begins here, continues to follow the former bed of the Luppe, the Bauerngraben branches off to the right to the north and, after crossing under the Burgauenbach, flows northwest through the Burgaue . About 200 meters before its confluence with the Neue Luppe , the Bauerngraben takes in the Burgauenbach, although it has a much larger drain here.

Before the Neue Luppe was built in the 1930s, the Bauerngraben flowed into the Hundewasser , which is a former tributary of the White Elster . It only flowed on the right side of the ridge and was therefore much shorter than it is today. Its upper course was not referred to as the Bauerngraben and flowed separately into the Luppe in the area where it now branches off.
