The underground exhibition hall (also underground exhibition hall or in historical writing also Untergrundmeßhalle ) was the first underground exhibition building in the world and was under the Leipzig Market .

history

Construction of the underground exhibition center, May 1924.

At the Leipzig Trade Fair in 1919, around 2000 exhibitors were no longer able to get a booth due to overcrowding in the exhibition halls. For this reason, a wooden hall measuring 40 meters by 80 meters was set up on the market in front of the old town hall for the time of the fair . However, this had to be rebuilt and dismantled for each trade fair. In 1922, the city council limited its approval of this solution until the autumn fair in 1924, after which it refused to put it on the market. Since the barracks significantly disrupted the overall picture of the market, but the central location in the middle of the city center brought many advantages, the exhibitors pressed for a permanent solution. The only way to be able to continue exhibiting there was now to build the exhibition hall underground.

So on May 23, 1924, the excavation work began for the first (and probably to this day only) underground exhibition building in the world based on plans by Carl Crämer . The underground exhibition hall opened for the spring fair in 1925 had dimensions of 98 meters in length and 45 meters in width and had an exhibition area of 1,800 m² for 175 exhibitors.

The entrance building with decorative details in the style of Art Deco , which fits very well into the historical ensemble , was designed by Otto Droge . Behind a low parapet made of Rochlitz porphyry , access to the exhibition building is via a two-flight staircase on the southern end of the market.

Between 1986 and 1988 the building was completely renovated due to its poor structural condition. Because it was enlarged a little, the scope of the work corresponded to a new building.

After the Leipzig Exhibition Center was moved from the city center to the New Exhibition Center, the underground exhibition center was used by the “Markt 1” discotheque.

Entrance to the City-Tunnel-Station Markt

Restored historical access, today to the City-Tunnel-Station

In the course of the construction of the Leipzig City Tunnel , the underground exhibition center had to be demolished in October 2005. In its place, the underground stopping point Leipzig Markt was built , and the commissioning took place on December 15, 2013. The south entrance of the City-Tunnel-Station is reminiscent of the underground exhibition center, which was rebuilt true to the original in Droges, a listed building.
