Dick's Picks Volume 15 is a Live - triple album of the band Grateful Dead .

history

The songs on the album were recorded on September 3, 1977 in Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey , and released on October 18, 1999 on their own label, Grateful Dead Records .

The Grateful Dead only performed once at Raceway Park . The album was produced by Betty Cantor-Jackson, who had already produced several Dead albums and co-produced a total of 26 records for the Grateful Dead.

In July 1977 the studio album Terrapin Station came out, from which the songs Estimated Prophet , Samson and Delilah and Terrapin Station were chosen for the setlist. From last year's album Steal Your Face (1976) the songs Promised Land and Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo were used. From the next studio album Shakedown Street (1978) the songs Good Lovin and New Minglewood Blues were used, but both were not written by Dead members and have been in the live set for a long time. That night, Truckin was played for the first time since September 28, 1975. The same evening the bands New Riders of the Purple Sage and Marshall Tucker Band also performed . The whole show was also broadcast on radio station WNEW (New York).

The name Dick's Pick comes from the official recording archivist of the band Dick Latvala , who started the series and selected the songs for it until his death in 1999. Then David Lemieux took over the archive. Dick's Picks Volume 15 was not released until after his death. The song selection was also ready for Dick's Picks Volume 16 . Both albums are dedicated to him and include two of his favorite shows. In the booklet for Vol. 15 the band said goodbye in his name:

" People of Earth ...
Greetings from the great beyond. I am contacting you at this time to assure you that all is well and to let you know that Dick's Picks shall continue in my absence just as before. My plans for future releases are well known to my teammates and they have sworn with their blood to remain true to the cause. I hope this release will alleviate any doubts concerning my posthumous powers.
The Archivist formerly known as Dick "

Like the previous albums in the Dick's Pick series, this one also has a caveat emptor warning:

" This release was digitally mastered directly from the original tapes. It is a snapshot of history, not a modern professional recording, and may therefore exhibit some minor technical anomalies and the unavoidable effects of the ravages of time. "

criticism
