Shakedown Street is the tenth studio album by the band Grateful Dead .

history

The album was released on November 15, 1978 by Arista Records .

As a producer for this album, the band leader of Little Feat Lowell George could be won, who died six months after the release of a heart attack . George was hired to get away from the role of executive producer that one had with Keith Olsen.

Jerry Garcia said in an interview that they chose George because they wanted someone who knows the mechanics of a band. Bill Kreutzmann even went as far as comparing George with a band member, because as an experienced musician he picked up the guitar himself and played along when he said that songs were not good and had to be changed.

The recordings of the album had to be interrupted for the Egypt tour, during which the band also played at the Pyramids of Giza . Although this performance is considered legendary due to the environment, it was musically rather disappointing. After this tour, appearances in the United States were canceled so that the album could be released in time for the later USA tour. Since George had no time at this point, the production work was completed by John Kahn .

As singles were first Good Lovin / Stagger Lee and 1979 Shakedown Street / France decoupled.

Gilbert Shelton , inventor of the comic series The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers and an important representative of the underground comix , was responsible for the album cover .

The album was first released on CD in 1990, before a revised version of the six songs and six additional songs were released by Rhino Records for the box set Beyond Description (1973-1989) in 2004 , which were then also released as a single CD in 2006.

successes

The album reached number 41 on the Billboard charts .

On July 4, 1987 the album reached gold status .
